Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival at UCCS 2010

Call for Volunteers

For this year the festival will be primarily a one day event on Saturday September 18th from 9 AM to 4 PM in and around the University Center at UCCS, highlighted by Cool Science's ever-popular live science demonstration shows and Hands-on Science Carnival for kids (targeting 2nd-8th grades, but always fun for all). We will also add a speaker series, workshops and laboratory tours mostly for the high school and older crowd.

*** We need volunteers for a variety of tasks:

  • Event Setup (Friday)
  • Event Setup (saturday)
  • Activity Station Leaders
  • Registration
  • Volunteer Check-in/Coordination
  • Runners
  • Information Table
  • Photographers
  • Survey Takers
  • Teardown and Cleanup

We'll provide everything you need- including a T-shirt so you'll look like a Cool Scientist- and show you everything you'll need to know to impress the most curious of kids. We'll also have a break room with breakfast and lunch food and drinks.

*** We also need 6-8 SUPER-Volunteers:

  • You'll need to come for 2-3 hours sometime during the week before Saturday (arranged to fit your schedule)
  • We'll train you to be an expert on 3 or 4 related Activity Stations
  • You will train the Activity Station Demonstrators for your stations early Saturday morning before the Carnival
  • You will also supervise your Activity Stations during the Carnival

We will do something special for all our volunteers, and something SUPER-special for our SUPER-Volunteers!

If you would like to volunteer, email Debbie@coolscience.org.

If you would like to be a SUPER-Volunteer, email Marc@coolscience.org.

Special Projects

We can use some extra help with a few special little projects that may appeal to some of you:

Kids Dinosaur Bone "Dig"

We're working with the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Center on a fun Activity Station for kids to feel like they're participating in a real field excavation. We want to encase a couple large dinosaur bones in dry mud or clay, and have teams of kid "paleontologists" carefully excavate their find using brushes and other delicate tools, just like real scientists would do. We need help to build a mold, fill it with the approproate mud, and set it up on site. This would be an excellent project for a student group. If you're interested, email Marc@coolscience.org.

Do you have any other cool ideas for activities? Marc would love to hear about them!

Colorado Springs CoOL Iron Science Teacher

As part of What If: A Festival of Creativity & Innovation, Cool Science will host Colorado Spring's first CoOL Iron Science Teacher competition, similar to what the Exploratorium in San Francisco has been doing for years. We'll challenge our "teachers" to create cool science demonstrations and activities using everyday household items. If you're a teacher (or would just like to feel like one) find out more about how you can join in the friendly competition.
